GMs,
If you've looked at the spreadsheet over the past 2-3 days you've likely noticed that I've begun the process of preparing for the offseason. I had already been planning to announce that the 2023 draft would be shortened to 3 rounds in part to account for the fact that there will be a whole team worth of NHL players in Seattle added to the pool, but I didn't feel comfortable at the time cutting rounds from drafts where picks had been traded. After assessing the general number of pending UFAs, as well as how many 4th and 5th round picks have been traded, I find myself thinking it necessary to move this timeline forward and propose a compromise regarding 4th and 5th round picks that have been traded in the form of compensatory picks.
My rationale is based on the following points:
There are going to be quite a few teams essentially punting in the late rounds of the draft based on their roster numbers. I have no plans to expand minor league rosters for the 21-22 season, or to entertain proposals to expand rosters for 22-23 prior to solidifying inactive GMs. Additionally, if there are still players that a GM likes beyond 3 rounds of drafting they will be available in free agency.
My personal preference would be to make the change to 3 rounds in 2021, though I have no problem waiting until 2022 if teams had significant plans for the late rounds of their 2021 drafts. I have attached a poll to this post where teams can voice their preference.
Traded 2021 4th and 5th round picks:
I asked the Maine Moose under the hypothetical that we were not in a dead period of trading, if he would have traded my original 4th round pick (4.19) back to me for his original 5th round pick (5.2) and another 5th round pick, which he said yes to. Under this hypothetical scenario, all 24 teams would own their 2021 4th round pick and 22/24 teams would own their 2021 5th round picks- myself and Maine would have extra 5th round picks at the expense of Brandon and Bellville. In cutting the final 2 rounds, I would forfeit the extra pick I have and award the Moose a compensatory pick at the end of the draft- #73 overall.
Traded 2022 4th and 5th round picks:
Montreal has 2 extra 4th round picks, Lahti has 1 extra 4th round pick, Vaxjo has an extra 5th round pick and Belleville has an extra 5th round pick which offsets his traded 2021 5th rounder. I would award 4 compensatory picks at the end of the draft: pick 73 to Montreal, 74 to Lahti, 75 to Montreal and 76 to Vaxjo. These picks come at the expense of Brandon, Amarillo, Victoria and Lyon. Brandon and Amarillo getting a 'break' is probably 'fair' considering their timing joining late in the season, and I don't feel it to be 'fair' to penalize the Grizzlies or Lions for things that they had no way to see coming.
If anybody outright opposes the shortening of the draft or feels the compensation awarded is unfair, please feel free to reach out via DM, comment on this post, or on slack. Thanks guys!
